5 Simple Ways to Improve Eye Health

1. Wear Sunglasses

You probably already wear sunglasses for visual comfort outdoors (or as a fashion accessory). However, did you pay attention to your sunglasses’ UVA and UVB protection? Look for sunglasses that block 100 percent of UVA and UVB rays. If you spend a great deal of time outside in the sun – and especially near the water – invest in polarized lenses. These lenses significantly reduce glare, making driving and boating safer and easier.

2. Get the Right Nutritional Support

Eating a diet rich in vitamins C and E, zinc, essential fatty acids, and lutein and zeaxanthin help maintain and even enhance eye health. Ascorbic acid (vitamin C) has been found to reduce the risk of cataract development and age-related macular degeneration. Vitamin E helps to prevent the eyes’ cellular structure from free radical damage.

Foods rich in the above nutrients include leafy green vegetables (broccoli, cabbage, kale, spinach), citrus fruits, sweet potatoes, beans, and whole grains. Not only will a nutrient-rich diet help stave off ocular degeneration, but by maintaining a healthy weight, you will significantly reduce your risk of type 2 diabetes, the leading cause of adult blindness.

3. Move Your Desk Away From the Window

If you have a large office window with a great city view, you may be putting significant strain on your eyes if your desk faces it. Although you probably enjoy the perks of looking out of the window as you work, enduring the glare from a window in addition to the glare from a computer monitor can be highly damaging to your long-term vision. If you can’t move your desk, consider wearing 100 percent UVA and UVB protecting glasses, or installing ultraviolet-blocking window film.

4. Quit Smoking

There aren’t any good reasons to keep smoking, but now you have another great reason to quit – smoking accelerates macular degeneration.
